Meissen Porcelain Vase and Cover Emblematic of Fire and War, after the earlier vases designed by Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775). The baluster form body molded in low relief with a battle scene from the Seven Years War, over the seated figure of a captive Orientalist figure, the decorative handles formed as war trophies to one side, and the figures of Mars as a soldier and a Putto to the other side, the finial formed as the figure of Jupiter astride a spread winged eagle, with a lightening bolt held aloft. To the reverse, a blue shield, with the motto, " DIEU ET MON DROIT," reserved in gold. To base underside of the vase, underglaze blue crossed swords mark, incised N. 321 and imprinted 40. Circa 1900.

{Approximate dimensions: 26" H. x 15 1/2" W. x 10 1/2" D.}.

To vase: Body with interior firing and hairline cracks that opened up, resealed and overpainted, partly visible to scroll under putto behind Mars. Mars right side body sealed and with overpainting from blue cape at left shoulder across body toward right waist, the body broken off and glued back there, with related repairs to helmet rear, and weapon near pink furling cloth. Tip of brown spear broken off, absent, and replaced golden orb. Mars right hand broken off at wrist and glued back, overpainted, now visible. Hairline crack below arm, visible. Minor repairs and overpainting to the horse legs and reins, epaulets, toward center of the low relief scene. Orientalist figure with left large toe and right thumb broken off and glued back, overpainted. To the feathered flourish near trumpet and flags, a hairline from mouth of vase, along the shoulder seam, visible. Minor loss to tip of a feather, and to tip of flame end of cannon.

To top: Both eagle wings with chips and sections broken off and professionally repaired and overpainted, now the paint flaking. Eagle beak tip broken off, overpainted and tiny chip to lower beak. Jupiter left arm broken off in a few pieces, repaired, and overpainted now visible, including to bottom part of thunderbolt. Toes to Jupiter's feet broken off and also professionally repaired and overpainted. Wide gilt band toward bottom of the cover with minor gilt losses, surface wear and scratches.

Property from the Collection of Frances and Ronald Dutro. San Francisco. Ronald Dutro was born in Oakland and began his lifelong opera career as a teenager with the San Francisco Opera. Frances Thanash was born in Fresno, and was a highly regarded singer in her right. After Ronald Dutro won the American Opera Auditions in 1959, he made his European debut at La Scala, Milan, Italy. The Dutros ended up staying in Europe for twenty-five years, where Ron sang baritone roles. The last fifteen years of their Continental sojourn, the Dutros lived in Berlin, Germany. There, they entertained a large variety of singers, including David Bowie.

The Dutros returned to San Francisco in the 1980s, where they re-installed their notable Salon room, filled with Meissen and other Continental Porcelains, Art Nouveau and later cameo glass, and their large collection of artwork by German Artist Richard Muller. Ron Dutro died in 2006, Frances died in 2020.
