Meissen Porcelain Centerpiece Tobacco Jar, modelled as a large wine barrel, on a Neoclassical style base, modelled with five youth grape harvesters or musicians to the sides. The side figures include a seated luthier on a half barrel, a seated hurdy gurdy player, a standing female grape picker; a vendangeur seated on a barrel, with a goblet in one hand, and knife blade in the other, and a vendangeur standing on a ladder. Painted in polychrome enamels and gilding. Underglaze blue crossed swords mark to underside base, pressnummer Y2 incised, impressed 88 and with gilt 44. Late 19th Century.

Cover to barrel absent. Figure on ladder broken off and glued back on and with replaced right thumb, ladder base glued to ladder at base glued and overpainted, top of lute broken off and glued back on and overpainted, now visible. Seated viognier with blade replaced, and left leg and footat stocking broken off and glued back on, hurdy gurdy players hands broken off, left hand completely replaced; right hand partially replaced. Tip of right foot toes replaced on standing harvest, basket of grapes, left side, broken off and glued back on.

Frances Thanash was born in Fresno, and was a highly regarded singer in her right. After Ronald Dutro won the American Opera Auditions in 1959, he made his European debut at La Scala, Milan, Italy. The Dutros ended up staying in Europe for twenty-five years, where Ron sang baritone roles. The last fifteen years of their Continental sojourn, the Dutros lived in Berlin, Germany. There, they entertained a large variety of singers, including David Bowie.
The Dutros returned to San Francisco in the 1980s, where they re-installed their notable Salon room, filled with Meissen and other Continental Porcelains, Art Nouveau and later cameo glass, and their large collection of artwork by German Artist Richard Muller. Ron Dutro died in in 2006, Frances died in 2020.
