Masterpieces of the National Palace Museum Collection: A Group of Eight Volumes

Published by the National Palace Museum, Taipei, between 1969 and 1972, this group of eight hardcover volumes forms part of the celebrated Masterpieces of the National Palace Museum Collection series, issued to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China. The publication also coincided with the 1970 Osaka World Exposition (Expo '70), an international event that provided an important opportunity for Taiwan to present the artistic achievements of traditional Chinese civilization to a global audience.

Drawn from the finest holdings of the National Palace Museum, the series was conceived as a comprehensive introduction to the museum's most celebrated collections, presenting carefully selected masterpieces through high-quality color photography accompanied by scholarly commentary. At a time when international access to the National Palace Museum's collections was still relatively limited, these beautifully produced volumes became an important reference for museums, libraries, scholars, collectors, and students throughout the world.

The present group comprises eight volumes: Masterpieces of Chinese Writing Materials, Masterpieces of Chinese Miniature Crafts, Masterpieces of Chinese Painting, Masterpieces of Chinese Portrait Painting, Masterpieces of Chinese Silk Tapestry and Embroidery, Masterpieces of Chinese Bronze Mirrors, Masterpieces of Chinese Porcelain, and Masterpieces of Chinese Jade. Together they present an exceptional survey of the artistic achievements of Chinese civilization across a wide range of media, from painting, jade, and porcelain to textiles, writing implements, decorative arts, and bronze mirrors.

More than exhibition catalogues, these publications represent an important milestone in the international dissemination of Chinese art history. Issued during a period when the National Palace Museum was actively introducing its unparalleled collections to audiences beyond Taiwan, the series contributed significantly to the study and appreciation of Chinese art throughout the second half of the twentieth century and remains an enduring scholarly reference today.

Dimensions: Each approximately H. 11 × W. 8 1/2 inches (27.9 × 20.3 cm).
