Manner of Chapuis, Pair of Empire Style Japanned Side Chairs. Each with demilune top rail and sides painted and stencilled in ocher camaiëu with urns, scrolls, foliage, etc. on curved supports terminating in ball feet.
Note: The design of this pair of chairs is in the manner of Jean-Joseph Chapuis (Belgian, 1765-1864), who was influenced by chairs made even earlier by François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter working with his sons as Jacob Freres. The deep inverted U design was revolutionary, particularly in the use of steam heat to make the bentwood leg. Such furniture was considered cutting edge modernism for the remainder of the 19th Century. The French interior designer Madeleine Castaing (1894-1992), owned three variations of the chair in her homes in Paris, at her country home, Maison des Lèves, Chartres, France, and in at least two projects for clients elsewhere.
{Approximate dimensions: 34 3/4" high x 21 1/8" wide x 23 1/2" deep.}.
