Li Geng (1885–1964)
Laughing Buddha (Budai Monk), 1938
Ink and color on paper, Hanging Scroll.
Li Geng was one of the most influential painters to emerge from Xianyou, Fujian. Widely regarded as a master of twentieth-century Fujian painting, he successfully combined the spirit of traditional literati art with the vitality of local folk culture. Renowned especially for his depictions of immortals, Buddhist subjects, and historical figures, Li developed a highly individual style characterized by bold brushwork, expressive forms, and unrestrained energy.
His artistic achievements earned widespread admiration during his lifetime. Xu Beihong praised him, writing: “Among those who excel through originality and unconventional vigor, Li Geng stands foremost; his bold and unrestrained spirit recalls the great eccentric masters of the past.” Master Hongyi famously paired him with Qi Baishi as “Qi of the North and Li of the South” (Bei Qi Nan Li). Beyond painting, Li was also accomplished in poetry, calligraphy, seal carving, and music, making him one of the most versatile artists of modern Fujian.
This work depicts Budai, the beloved laughing monk traditionally regarded as an incarnation of Maitreya Buddha. Seated comfortably with his large cloth sack beside him, Budai appears relaxed and content, embodying the virtues of generosity, tolerance, and spiritual freedom. The painting is further enhanced by a poetic inscription that reflects the carefree spirit of the subject:
乾坤之大也,容我一胖腴。
Vast are Heaven and Earth, yet they make room for my ample form.
自在今如是,娑婆世不殊。
As free and content as I am today, this mortal world is no different.
逢人开口笑,随地结跏趺。
Meeting others, I greet them with a smile; wherever I am, I sit in meditation.
示此大布袋,回头却知吾。
Behold this great cloth sack—turn back and you will know who I am.
The work is dated to the winter month of a Wuyin year (1938)and signed by Li Geng.
Executed with remarkably fluid and confident brushwork, the figure is rendered through a few vigorous strokes that convey both physical presence and spiritual vitality. The folds of the robe are defined by swift, calligraphic lines, while subtle variations of ink create a rich sense of volume and movement. Particularly striking is the artist’s use of indigo wash across the background, applied after the completion of the figure to create a luminous atmospheric field. The cool blue tone not only accentuates the pale flesh of Budai but also enhances the contemplative mood of the composition, demonstrating Li Geng’s mastery of ink, color, and expressive form.
