Large Porcelain Guanyin . {Height 46 1/2 inches}.

This lot comes from the family collection of Ms. Julia Tsui. Michaan’s Auctions is honored to present these works with Ms. Tsui’s generous support.

Her late husband, Nelson Tsui (1932–2022), was a British-trained master mariner who later served in the Marine Department of the Hong Kong Government. According to his autobiography, he began his maritime career with Alfred Holt & Co., also known as the Blue Funnel Line, trained in England, and received his Certificate of Competency as Master of Foreign-Going Steamships in 1961. He was the author of My Unique Memoirs.

This Guanyin is documented in a letter dated September 15, 1989, from Patrick K. M. Kwok to Mr. Nelson Tsui. Kwok was the director of Kwok Gallery, a Singapore gallery specializing in Chinese antiques and works of art. In the letter, Kwok valued the Guanyin at $6,000 and described it as “unusual in quality and size.”

Ms. Tsui’s mother was the renowned Cantonese opera performer Kwan Ying Lin (关影怜), born Chow Lin (周莲), who died on November 18, 1979. A native of Xiaolan, Zhongshan, Guangdong Province, she was active from the 1920s through the 1950s as a celebrated leading female performer in Cantonese opera and also appeared in several Hong Kong films.

My Unique Memoirs
