Large Chinese Thin-Body Porcelain Longevity Bowl
Gao Meisheng (高梅生, b. 1934)
A monumental example of Jingdezhen thin-body porcelain (botai ci), finely painted in famille rose enamels with ripe peaches and blooming peonies, traditional symbols of longevity, prosperity, wealth, and honor. The exterior is richly decorated with fruit-laden branches and flowering peonies, while the interior is centered by a circular dragon-and-phoenix medallion, an auspicious motif representing harmony, marital felicity, and the union of yin and yang.
Created by the renowned ceramic artist Gao Meisheng, this bowl exemplifies the extraordinary technical achievements of modern Jingdezhen thin-body porcelain, celebrated for being “white as jade, thin as paper, bright as a mirror, and resonant as a chime.” Combining a remarkably delicate body, large scale, and intricate decoration, the work demonstrates both the artist’s technical mastery and his commitment to the highest traditions of Chinese ceramic art.
