Large Chinese Porcelain Plaque Screen
Wu Huiming (吴惠明, b. 1969), dated 1986

A monumental porcelain plaque depicting the celebrated Daoist theme The Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea (八仙过海), painted in vivid enamels and mounted within an elaborately carved hardwood screen. The circular plaque presents the Eight Immortals traversing turbulent waves, each carrying his or her characteristic attribute, illustrating the well-known proverb “Each Immortal displays his own magical powers” (八仙过海，各显神通). Richly rendered figures, auspicious clouds, flowering trees, and rolling seas create a lively and harmonious composition filled with blessings and good fortune.

The plaque bears the title Baxian Guohai Tu and is signed by Wu Huiming, a distinguished Chinese ceramic artist and Senior Arts and Crafts Master from Jiangxi Province. Born in Duchang, Jiangxi, Wu is renowned for his finely executed porcelain paintings of immortals, Buddhist figures, arhats, and subjects drawn from Chinese history and folklore. His works are admired for their elegant compositions, refined brushwork, imaginative conception, and expressive vitality, and have been widely collected both in China and abroad.

The plaque is housed in an intricately carved hardwood screen decorated with scrolling floral motifs, complementing the traditional subject matter and enhancing its decorative presence.
