Karen Margolis (American, 20th/21st Century), Denouement, watercolor, gouache, and map fragments on Abaca. Unsigned. [Approximate dimensions - overall: 18" H x 46" W]. Artist's Bio: Karen Margolis is a New York-based artist whose process-intensive works construct visual maps of consciousness and psychological experience. Trained first in psychology before turning to art, she draws on her understanding of neuropsychology to create intricate compositions built from thousands of hand-cut circles — referencing the Buddhist enso, the neuron, and the synapse simultaneously. Her methodology is rooted in accumulation and controlled destruction: she sources obsolete maps and subjects them to burning and cutting inspired by trephination, the ancient practice of boring holes in the skull, transforming defunct systems of geographic orientation into cartographies of interior states. Her public commissions include a permanent installation for Amtrak's Metropolitan Lounge at Moynihan Train Hall, New York (2023), and mosaic panels for the 86th Street subway station through MTA Arts & Design (2018). Her work has been exhibited at Foley Gallery, Garis & Hahn, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, the Parrish Art Museum, and the Paper Biennial at the Rijswijk Museum in the Netherlands. Margolis is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and a residency at Dieu Donné Papermill. She holds a BS in Psychology from Colorado State University and studied art at Parsons School of Design, the School of Visual Arts, and the Art Students League of New York.
