In the Manner of Qi Baishi (1864-1957)
Amaranthus Tricolor, late 1930s
Ink and color on paper, hanging scroll

Inscription: Nourished amid autumn's desolation, it regains its crimson hue. A verse by an ancient poet. Baishi.
Seal: Mu Ren
{Image size: 40 x 13 1/2 inches (101.6 x 34.3 cm)}.
{Overall size: 54 1/2 x 16 1/2 inches (138.4 x 41.9 cm)}.

The amaranthus is rendered in vivid vermilion, with slender leaves and branching stems forming a flowing vertical composition. Steady yet varied brushwork alternates between fine outlines and fuller passages of color. The inscription provides a lively counterpoint, its brisk strokes and rich variations in ink tone complementing the red foliage. The overall treatment recalls Qi Baishi's style of approximately the late 1930s.

Condition: Retains an old mounting and is in good overall condition. A narrow white vertical line is visible within the foliage at the middle right.

Provenance: From a distinguished private collection in Lafayette, California, assembled over several decades with an unwavering dedication to Japanese and Chinese art. With the generous support of the collector's family, Michaan's Auctions is honored to present selected treasures from this important collection.
