In the Manner of Pu Ru (1896-1963) and Pu Jingqiu
Flowers in a Porcelain Vase, 1945
Ink and color on paper, hanging scroll
Inscription: Yellow-ground famille rose vase with floral and lotus scroll decoration. I saw this antique famille rose porcelain at the residence of my elder brother Xuezhai and painted a copy. In the summer of the yiyou year (1945), I asked my younger sister Jingqiu to paint the flowers. Recorded by Pu Ru.
Seals: Xinyu, Seal of Pu Ru
Circular seal, lower right: Half a Bed of Red Beans
{Image size: 45 x 15 1/4 inches (114.3 x 38.7 cm)}.
{Overall size: 62 x 18 7/8 inches (157.5 x 47.9 cm)}.
The porcelain vase is rendered in rich, saturated colors, with dense passages of pigment giving it a pronounced sense of volume and an almost sculptural presence. The flowers are equally vivid yet refined, balancing decorative richness with elegance. Together, the vessel and blossoms evoke the grandeur and cultivated taste associated with the Qing imperial household.
Xuezhai, mentioned in the inscription, refers to Pu Jin (1893-after August 1966). Pu Jingqiu, also known as Songying, was a member of the Qing imperial clan and the younger sister of Pu Jin. Known as the Fifteenth Aunt, she belonged to the Beijing-Tianjin painting circle alongside Pu Ru and Pu Jin and specialized in finely detailed paintings of plants and insects, particularly butterflies.
The Chan Liu Art Museum in Taiwan holds a comparable collaborative work by Pu Ru and Pu Jingqiu, Wisteria and Green Willows in a Blue-Ground Vase, dated 1945, ink and color on paper, 88 x 33 cm, item number 20250189. Its inscription closely parallels that of the present work, differing chiefly in the description of the porcelain vessel.
