Haku Maki (Japanese, 1924–2000) Poem 72–75, mid-20th century, woodblock print with embossing, signed, titled and numbered 1/201 in the lower margin, artist seal stamped lower right, featuring a highly stylized, calligraphic form derived from kanji, rendered with bold abstraction and deep relief, exemplifying the artist’s distinctive fusion of traditional Japanese printmaking with modern graphic sensibility. The composition highlights Maki’s characteristic use of velvety color fields and sculptural surface created through his innovative woodblock and cement technique, in which heavily embossed forms interact with negative space to evoke both language and image. Like many works in his “Poem” series, the print reflects his interest in transforming ideographic characters into expressive visual symbols, drawing on ancient Chinese scripts while reimagining them through a contemporary lens. {Image size: 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches; Frame size: 14 3/8 x 11 5/8 inches}.
