Bio: Born on Staten Island, the artist was an American fashion photographer known for his work on the cover of many American magazines. Starting out as Horst P. Horsts' assistant for three years, and upon winning a contract with Seventeen Magazine in 1948, he opened his own studio. His 1969 photograph of Janis Joplin was exhibited at the Amon Carter Museum in Texas. Some of his more controversial work includes a Cosmopolitan Magazine centerfold of a nude Burt Reynolds and a series of photographs of a young Brooke Shields. He also helped develop and support the career of a young model Gia Carangi, who gained supermodel status until her heroin addiction led to difficulties.. The artist created images for many movie posters, album covers and broadway shows including photos of Donna Summer, Julie Andrews, Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, KISS, Duran Duran, among others. He was commissioned by Mikhail Baryshnikov to photograph the dancers of The American Ballet Theatre, which formed the basis of a nationally touring exhibit. His work has appeared on the covers of Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, Harpers Bazaar, Interview, Newsweek and Rolling Stone magazines.
Notes: This lot includes "Francesco Scavullo, Song, A Photographic Retrospective" pamphlet from Martin Lawrence Galleries, a print out of the invoice, ten brief biography of each subject, and ten certificate of authenticity; some sheets have foxing. All ten photographs are in matching frames; some show dirt, wear, wear to clear plastic sleeves for sheets, and sealed verso; approximate dimensions - framed (each): 29-3/4 x 25-3/4 inches.
