Empire Style Bronze Figural Mantel Clock, Voyage of Love and Time, 'Le Voyage de l’Amour et du Temps,' after a model by bronzier and fondeur Claude Galle (French 1759 - 1815), inspired by Louis Simon Boizot (French 1759 - 1809).
The body of the clock designed as a cisele, gilt and patinated bronze navette, with the patinated bronze figures of Chronos and Eros, equipped with Scythe and hourglass, or bow and quiver, respectively. The vessel prow and stern modeled with swan's heads, the body perched on top of crocodile heads with mouths agape, issuing spear-form tongues, over a rectangular base of ocher, black and brown flecked marble, resting on four lion's paw monopedia.
The circular clock mechanism with white enamel face, Roman hours, and cardinal numbers on the quarter hour, eight day hooked leader pendulum, the twin-barrel movement with counter wheel striking on a bell, striking on the hour and the half hour. Glazed door to front, pierced brass door to back. Late 20th Century. Plate to works back, with facsimile stamp: MEDAILLE D'ARGENT, VINCENTI C-3, 1855, also impressed A.1 in oval, at 10 o'clock, MADE N FRANCE, 3407 and 81.
{Approximate dimensions: 19 1/4" H. x 21" W. x 7" D., the scythe 13" L. }.
Lyricist Joseph-Alexandre de Ségur, wrote a tune in 1800, that may have been the inspiration for both the drawing, and the figure. Segur's allegory roughly translates as: "L'amour fait passer le temps, le temps fait passer l'amour" ("Love makes time pass, but time makes love pass").
Case in very good condition, with minor surface wear, scratches, dust and patination to metal parts; loose glazed door to front.
