EDGAR ALWIN PAYNE (American, 1883-1947), "Hollywood Canyon," oil on canvas, (approximate dimensions - canvas: 9-7/8 h x 12 w inches), signed lower left; titled written on canvas verso; label verso.
Bio: Edgar Payne was a leading California plein-air painter, renowned for his vivid Sierra Nevada landscapes and portrayals of Native Americans on horseback—honored with the naming of Payne Lake. At fourteen, he left home after his father opposed his pursuit of art. Mostly self-taught, he briefly studied at the Art Institute of Chicago but favored independent learning. He began his career painting murals and stage sets before dedicating himself to landscapes after discovering the Sierra Nevadas in 1909. Payne traveled extensively, capturing scenes across Europe, Canada, and the American Southwest. In 1920, he founded and served as the first president of the Laguna Beach Art Association. During the Great Depression, he taught and authored Composition of Outdoor Painting, a foundational text in American art education.
