Collection of Chinese Export-Style Blue and White Porcelain Tableware, Yong An Department Store Commission, Shanghai, Republic Period.
A collection of blue and white porcelain tableware commissioned by the renowned Yong An Department Store of Shanghai during the Republican period. The service includes three octagonal platters, numerous plates and bowls, and a square serving bowl, all decorated with traditional landscape scenes, pavilions, figures, and riverside views inspired by classical Chinese painting. Some pieces bear the four-character mark “Yong An Jian Zhi” (永安监制, “Supervised by Yong An”) on the base.
Founded in 1918, Yong An was one of Shanghai’s famed “Four Great Department Stores.” To supply its clientele with high-quality porcelains, the company commissioned wares from Jingdezhen kilns, selecting fashionable forms and decorative designs before employing skilled painters to complete the finished pieces. These porcelains reflect the blending of traditional Jingdezhen craftsmanship with the modern commercial culture of Republican Shanghai.
{Largest: L 19 5/8 inches (49 cm)}.
The large platters have the repaired cracks extending through the centers and have been stabilized on the reverse with traditional metal staples (riveted repair).
