Qing Dynasty, 19th Century
A finely executed Chinese embroidery panel depicting a qilin surrounded by scrolling floral motifs, auspicious emblems, and decorative borders. Worked in silk threads on an open gauze ground, the composition combines counted-stitch embroidery (naxia) with extensive Peking knot (also known as “Forbidden Stitch”) work, creating a richly textured surface of remarkable depth and refinement. The intricate knotting technique produces a distinctive raised, pearl-like effect, while the gauze-ground stitching lends precision and geometric clarity to the design.
The qilin, one of the most revered mythical creatures in Chinese tradition, symbolizes prosperity, benevolent rule, and the arrival of worthy descendants. Its presence amid flowering branches and auspicious motifs reflects traditional wishes for happiness, longevity, and family success. The exceptional technical complexity of the embroidery, requiring thousands of individually worked knots, exemplifies the extraordinary skill of Qing dynasty needlework and the sophisticated decorative arts produced for elite households.
