Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Immortal Figure.
The figure standing atop an integral pedestal base, depicted in flowing robes decorated in underglaze blue with stylized motifs, the head tilted slightly upward in a contemplative gaze, conveying an ethereal presence. The drapery rendered with rhythmic, calligraphic lines suggesting movement, while the elongated proportions and serene expression evoke the refined and otherworldly character associated with Daoist immortals. The base similarly decorated in blue and white, forming a cohesive visual unit with the figure. Executed in the sometsuke (blue-and-white) tradition, a term used in Japan to refer to Chinese export porcelains, particularly those produced in the late Ming period (circa 1620–1644) for the Japanese market. Such wares, often termed ko-sometsuke, were especially prized in the context of the tea ceremony for their spontaneity and painterly decoration. The present figure reflects this aesthetic, combining expressive brushwork with a sense of immediacy and charm.
