Attributed to Kanō Eitoku (1543–1590), Shakyamuni Descending from the Mountains

This is a Japanese ink-and-color hanging scroll depicting Shakyamuni descending from the mountains after years of ascetic meditation, attributed to Kanō Eitoku. The Buddha is shown walking slowly forward, his emaciated features and lowered gaze conveying the physical exhaustion and profound inward concentration that followed his long period of spiritual discipline.

The figure is brought to life with only a few remarkably economical strokes. Fine, lightly brushed lines define the face, hair, and beard, while the robes are constructed from bold, angular contours marked by rhythmic pauses, abrupt turns, and strongly accented changes of direction. Touches of muted red enliven the drapery, enhancing its decorative character. This union of expressive abbreviation, vigorous brushwork, and ornamental design is consistent with the monumental visual language associated with the Kanō tradition and the work of Eitoku.

Despite the extreme economy of means, the figure possesses compelling vitality and spiritual presence. The masterful balance between animated line, restrained color, and open space makes the painting a striking expression of Japanese Zen Buddhist figure painting.
