Painting and Calligraphy by Zhang Daqian (Chinese, 1899–1983), ink and color on paper. The calligraphy, a vertical work reading “乐生于智,寿本乎仁” (“Joy arises from wisdom; longevity is rooted in benevolence”), inscribed “丙戌秋日,蜀人张大千” (“Autumn day of the Bingxu year, Shu native Zhang Daqian”). The painting depicts two scholars seated beneath a pine tree, one playing the qin for the other, inscribed “癸巳夏日时江左,蜀人张大千” (“Summer day of the Guisi year, at Jiangzuo, Shu native Zhang Daqian”). {Calligraphy: Sight: 21 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, frame size: 22 x 6 3/4 inches}. {Painting: Sight: 10 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches, frame size: 13 1/2 x 12 3/8 inches}.
