An Indian Carved and Polychrome-Painted Mirrored Shrine Niche

A finely carved Indian wooden shrine niche of cusped arch form, richly decorated with openwork scrolling floral arabesques and retaining extensive traces of its original polychrome-painted surface in blue, red, and gilt. The center is inset with a shaped mirror framed by elaborate foliate carving, while the surrounding field is embellished with hand-painted floral vines. Originally conceived as an architectural or devotional shrine element, the reverse retains substantial original timber construction and later-added supports for freestanding display. With its intricate carving, vibrant painted decoration, and architectural form, the present work exemplifies the rich tradition of Indian carved and painted architectural ornament.
