Al G Fields Minstrels Framed Poster, showing Fields as "Harry Shunk, Minstrel Man." Printed by Otis Lithograph Co.
Alfred Griffin (Griffith?) Hatfield, 1848 - 1921, was born in West Virginia, and performed in various shows and circuses in the mid-west. His birthdate is alternately listed as 1850. His first proprietary minstrel shows debuted in 1886. Eventually, perhaps due to illness, he retired to farm life. His show, "Darkest America," premiered in 1894. This show included stereotypical depictions of black persons on plantations, working cotton and sugar, life on the Mississippi River, etc. Included in the cast were black and white performers. Circa 1910.
