After Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778), Four etchings from Vasi, Candelabri, Cippi, Sarcophagi, Tripodi Lucerne, et Ornamenti Antichi; including (i) “In Inghilterra presso il Signor Dalton…”: Focillon 680, Wilton-Edy 967, [plate: 15 1/4” H x 10” W]; (ii) "Altra veduta del Tripode antico...": Focillon 698, Wilton-Ely 985, [plate: 15 1/4” H x 10 1/8” W]; (iii) “Vaso antico di marmo, con urna,...": Focillon 683, Wilton-Ely 970, [plate: 15 1/4” H x 10” W]; and (iv) “Vaso cenerario di terra cotta,..": Focillon 697, Wilton-Ely 984, [plate: 15 1/4” H x 10 1/8” W]. All four etchings on laid paper. The plates that comprise the "Vasi, candelabri...." were originally issued as individual etchings, and in 1778, the 110 plates were first gathered together in two volumes. Piranesi’s son Francesco supplemented the existing series between 1779 and 1786 with eight additional prints and continued adding supplements until 1791.

(i) Sheet is toned with visible foxing to sight. (ii) Sheet is buckling, toned, and minor visible foxing to sight. (iii) Sheet is slightly buckling, toned, and very minor visible foxing to sight. (iv) Sheet was examined out of frame. Sheet: 21 7/8" H x 16 1/2" W. Sheet is toned, foxing, mat acid burn, and discoloration at low margin. Push-pin size punctures on the right side of sheet. Tape on top margin verso to mat. Framed (each): 29 3/8" H x 23 3/4" W. Dimensions provided are based on approximate measurements.

Daniel M. (Wygold) Mitchell Estate.  Mr. Mitchell was a Naval Officer and an entrepreneur.  Serendipitously, Lieutenant Commander Dan Mitchell transferred to the Naval Reserve where he joined VR-872 – a Navel transport squadron out of the Alameda Naval Air Station that Michaan’s is located on now.  He and his wife, Paris, loved to travel and made it a point to travel to Paris twice a year, and always brought back beautiful and interesting items.   His collection covers the spectrum from noted painters to precise metal aircraft and automobile models.  Michaan’s is honored to be offering this collection over the next four months.  The September collection includes artists Greg Gandy, Paul Charles Chocarne-Moreau, Giulio Rosati, and Marcel Brunery to name a few.  Along with a variety of Empire and Empire Style Gilt Bronze Figural clocks, period military helmets, marble busts, bronze and gilt brass urns, and complex models of military ships and aircraft.
