After Guanxiu (832-912)
Nagasena, the Twelfth Luohan
Ink rubbing on paper, hanging scroll, after a stone engraving

This rubbing reproduces Nagasena, the twelfth figure in the Sixteen Luohan series associated with Guanxiu, the Buddhist monk and painter of the late Tang dynasty. His distinctive luohan images were reproduced in later stone engravings, including those at Shengyin Temple in Hangzhou. Such rubbings preserve the engraved designs and provide material for the study of Buddhist imagery and its transmission.

An identical rubbing is held by the National Taiwan Museum, titled Nagasena, the Twelfth Venerable, accession number AH002881-001. The museum explains that a luohan, or arhat, is a Buddhist practitioner who has attained liberation from the cycle of rebirth. In the Mahayana tradition, certain arhats remain in the world at the command of the Buddha to uphold his teachings and guide sentient beings. The museum also notes that eighteen luohans are commonly enshrined in Buddhist temples, with varying names and forms, and praises the finely detailed and lifelike engraving of its example.

{Image size: 45 1/2 x 19 1/8 inches (115.6 x 48.6 cm)}.
{Overall size: 71 x 22 3/4 inches (180.3 x 57.8 cm)}.

Provenance: Collection of a longtime California collector.
