The vessel is finely potted with a broad, shallow bowl raised on a tall, spreading hollow foot. Its surface is painted in black and reddish-brown pigments with rhythmic bands of parallel lines, zigzags and geometric motifs. The ornament follows the contours of the vessel, transforming its rounded bowl and flaring foot into a unified and visually dynamic composition.

The Majiayao culture flourished primarily in present-day Gansu and Qinghai provinces along the upper reaches of the Yellow River. Representing one of the great achievements of Neolithic painted pottery, Majiayao ceramics are distinguished by their refined forms, mineral-pigment decoration and carefully organized patterns. Their spirals, parallel lines, cross-hatched designs and other abstract motifs reflect a sophisticated visual language that developed from the earlier Yangshao ceramic tradition. Such vessels served both practical and possibly ceremonial purposes, offering important evidence of the technological skill, aesthetic sensibility and communal beliefs of prehistoric societies in northwestern China.

马家窑文化主要分布于今甘肃、青海一带的黄河上游地区，是中国新石器时代彩陶艺术发展的高峰之一。马家窑彩陶以优美的造型、矿物颜料绘制的纹饰及严谨而富于变化的构图著称。旋纹、平行线纹、网格纹与其他抽象几何图案，在继承仰韶文化彩陶传统的基础上不断演化，逐渐形成具有鲜明地域特色的视觉语言。此类器物可能兼具日常使用与礼仪功能，体现了中国西北地区史前社会成熟的制陶技术、审美观念及精神信仰。
