A Chinese Red-Lacquered and Gilt-Decorated “Butterflies and Flowers” Trunk with Stand, Shanxi, circa 1880–1900.

The rectangular wooden trunk is covered in deep red lacquer and decorated in gilt and black with butterflies fluttering among flowering branches. The front is mounted with a prominent butterfly-form metal lock plate, complemented by metal carrying handles at the sides. It rests on a separate waisted stand with shaped aprons and scroll-form feet. The butterfly-and-flower decoration is traditionally associated with joy, affection, longevity, and flourishing prosperity.
Accompanied by a Certificate of Antiquity issued by Hang Fai Art Manufactor, Hong Kong, dated July 25, 2014, identifying the trunk as of Shanxi origin, constructed of elm or Chinese oak, and dating it to circa 1880–1900.

木胎长方形箱体,通体髹深红漆,以描金及黑彩装饰蝴蝶与折枝花卉,群蝶翩跹于花枝之间。正面装饰醒目的蝶形金属锁牌,两侧设金属提环;下承独立束腰式木座,壸门形牙板,卷云式足。蝴蝶花卉纹是中国传统吉祥题材,寓意喜悦和美、情意绵长、福寿延年及富贵繁盛。
附香港 Hang Fai Art Manufactor 于2014年7月25日出具的古董证书。证书注明此箱产自山西,以榆木或中国橡木制成,年代约为1880至1900年。
