A Japanese Two-Part Kiri Wood Tansu Cabinet
Meiji–Taisho Period (late 19th–early 20th century)
Constructed in two stacked sections of paulownia (kiri) wood, this Japanese tansu cabinet features a well-balanced arrangement of cupboard compartments, drawers, and decorative iron hardware. The upper section is fitted with a pair of cupboard doors opening to spacious storage compartments, while the lower section incorporates additional drawers flanked by paneled cupboard doors that open to reveal interior storage compartments. The façade is mounted with iron pulls, side carrying handles, lockplates, and a striking circular iron escutcheon that serves as a visual focal point.
Tansu cabinets of this type occupied an important place in traditional Japanese domestic life. The use of paulownia wood was especially valued for its light weight, dimensional stability, and natural resistance to humidity and insects, making it an ideal material for the storage of garments and treasured possessions. Large examples such as this were often associated with prosperous households and were sometimes included among a family's most important furnishings.
The cabinet's clean geometric form, warm wood grain, and bold iron fittings exemplify the restrained elegance characteristic of Japanese furniture design. Combining practical functionality with refined craftsmanship, this substantial two-part tansu remains a striking example of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Japanese woodworking traditions.
