A group of Japanese Kozuka and Menuki articles. {Approximate measurement each handle: L 3 7/8 inches}.

Provenance: From the collection of the distinguished San Francisco collector Irving Freedenberg, known as “Bill.”

Appraisal History:

The present sword fittings were appraised on July 6, 1979, by Leonard Bowman, a fine arts appraiser active in San Francisco and Honolulu. Listed as Item 1 on page 4 of the appraisal, the pair of menuki was identified at that time as dating to the late 18th century and assigned a replacement and insurable value of $150. A further menuki, listed as Item 2 on page 4, was identified as dating to the 19th century and assigned a replacement and insurable value of $125. The kozuka, depicting a figure holding a hawk on his arm and listed as Item 4 on page 4, was identified as dating to the late 18th to early 19th century and assigned a replacement and insurable value of $150.
